“My art allows me to envision life beyond the human perspective and gain a better understanding of the world around me. My goal is to use my camera to remove the barriers of our personal lives and draw our attention back to nature.”

Artist Biography:

Lizzy Willits is an environmental artist who uses photography to explore the human imprint on the natural world. Her choice of subject comes from an interest in ocean health and issues relating to plastic pollution. She feels more connected to nature by advocating for the protection of our ecosystem. Lizzy collaborates with conservation organizations and professionals to learn about the environment and wildlife affected by human waste. She uses found materials, often plastic sourced from nature, to create ephemeral sculptures that are then photographed.

Lizzy is an honors student at George Mason University’s School of Art and is scheduled to graduate in December 2018 with a BFA in photography. She is currently working with the Animal Vision Center of Virginia, the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center and Surfrider Foundation on a series titled, Out of Sight Out of Mind. The project will compare the vision of humans and animals in the context of seeing plastic pollution in the environment. Inspired by the work of Mandy Barker and Vilde Rolfsen, this series will incorporate the use of found materials to produce ephemeral, site-specific work that will be presented in December 2018.
